Why Bother With Stereoscopic Imaging? I designed Ice Pond to illustrate more than just parallax and the stereo window. The image also shows some visual qualities for which stereoscopic imaging is uniquely suited. Visual qualities like the transparency of liquids, translucency of icy surfaces, or the reflectivity and specularity of crystals or gemstones. 3d also helps to bring order and comprehension to structurally complex and/or cluttered scenes. As new digital media will facilitate the incorporation and display of 3d images to a broad audience, I expect increased commercial use of these fundamental advantages that stereoscopic images provide.
ANAGLYPHS Stereo pairs are difficult for most people to view, even after they have taken the time to learn the technique. For commercial applications, an economical solution is the anaglyph format. (Figure 6.) Anaglyphs contain both the left and right viewpoints multiplexed using color. That is, the left viewpoint overlays the right viewpoint in a different color. Using anaglyph 3d glasses (red lens over left eye, blue lens over right), this image is very easily seen in 3d. (For viewing the anaglyph printed here, you can obtain 3d glasses at most comic book shops, or from me - just send me a SASE and mark it "PEI offer.") Next time we cover the making of anaglyphs from stereo pairs using Photoshop.
